The introduction to parenting can start off as quite the challenge, often compounded by a long labour and birth, while then having to provide the very frequent care requirements of your new baby. This transition of feeding, sleeping and settling can be one of the most challenging aspects of parenthood, often with little time to try and adjust to this new rewarding, exciting but extremely tiring life.

Often, the traditional model of care for women and families in the postnatal period does not always work for modern families. In particular, care for women and families can often be disjointed, disconnected and can leave many families feeling abandoned and struggling at the very point where help is needed the most! The time that begins when you leave hospital (or have baby) is often known as the fourth trimester .

Throughout the fourth trimester, parents try many techniques to ensure that their baby is happy and healthy. However, these techniques can become ‘habits’ very quickly and especially in the first 6-8 weeks of a baby’s life. As baby grows older many of these ‘habits’ become problematic, challenging and difficult to maintain in the following weeks or months. During this time many parents resort to rectify these gained habits by searching for solutions to these, whether it is through consulting a lactation specialist, a sleep consultant or anything they can find to help through google!
